The Big Ear filtered system
An operatory is the opposite of a range. The handpiece and suction run continuously, chair after chair, and you have to hear your patient and your assistant straight through it. Sustained noise plus constant conversation is its own problem, and it points to a different filter than the one a shooter or a rider would choose. The shell is the same; what you put in it is not.

Flat-attenuation

The colored, interchangeable filters. Each lowers every frequency by about the same amount, so sound keeps its natural balance — voices, music, and warnings stay clear, just safely quieter. This is what makes the plugs hi-fi. Levels: 9, 15, 20, 25, and 30 dB.
Non-linear
"Open when it's quiet, clamped when it's loud."
A separate, level-dependent filter. It passes normal sound almost untouched so you keep full situational awareness, then automatically tightens against sudden, dangerous peaks — a gunshot, a backfire, an impact. Protection arrives only when the noise spikes.
Which one for the operatory
Sustained noise across a full day is the flat-attenuation case. Every frequency comes down by roughly the same amount, so speech keeps its shape — you are not leaning in to catch your assistant or asking a patient to repeat themselves, which is what happens when a plug eats the top end.
