Two systems in one custom plug. A flat attenuator lowers the course evenly, so partners and play still sound natural — never the muffled feeling of foam. Then a non-linear filter reacts to loudness, clamping harder the louder it gets, so the sharp crack of a thin-faced driver is driven safely below the danger line before it reaches your ear. The Big Ear filtered system
Noise on a course is not constant — it is a sharp crack at impact, a few hundred times a round, with long quiet stretches in between where you need to hear your group, the wind and the read. That pattern is what decides which filter you want, and it is a different answer from the one a machinist or a drummer needs. The shell is the same; what you put in it is not.
The two filter types — the part nobody else explains
Flat-attenuation
"Turn the room down, not off."
The colored, interchangeable filters. Each lowers every frequency by about the same amount, so sound keeps its natural balance — voices, music, and warnings stay clear, just safely quieter. This is what makes the plugs hi-fi. Levels: 9, 15, 20, 25, and 30 dB.
Non-linear
"Open when it's quiet, clamped when it's loud."
A separate, level-dependent filter. It passes normal sound almost untouched so you keep full situational awareness, then automatically tightens against sudden, dangerous peaks — a gunshot, a backfire, an impact. Protection arrives only when the noise spikes.
Which one for the course
The strike is an impulse — loud for a fraction of a second, then gone. That is precisely the profile the non-linear filter is built for: it stays open while you are talking, walking and reading the green, and tightens only when the peak arrives. You are not muffled for four hours to be protected for four seconds.
A flat-attenuation filter answers a different question — taking the whole round down a step on an exposed, windy course while keeping voices natural. Some players carry one of each and swap at the turn, which is the case the Select tier exists for.
