The Big Ear filtered system
On stage the problem is not only how loud it is — it is what getting quieter does to the music. Anything that takes the top end down further than the bottom changes what you are hearing, and you play to what you hear. Protecting tone matters as much as protecting level, which is why the filter choice on a stage is not the one a range officer would make. The shell is the same; what you put in it is not.

Flat-attenuation

The colored, interchangeable filters. Each lowers every frequency by about the same amount, so sound keeps its natural balance — voices, music, and warnings stay clear, just safely quieter. This is what makes the plugs hi-fi. Levels: 9, 15, 20, 25, and 30 dB.
Non-linear
"Open when it's quiet, clamped when it's loud."
A separate, level-dependent filter. It passes normal sound almost untouched so you keep full situational awareness, then automatically tightens against sudden, dangerous peaks — a gunshot, a backfire, an impact. Protection arrives only when the noise spikes.
Which one for the stage
Flat-attenuation is the whole point for a player. Because every frequency drops by about the same amount, pitch, timbre and balance survive the reduction — the mix still sounds like the mix, just safely quieter. A plug that darkens the top end makes you push, and pushing is how players hurt themselves.
